Sew Pretty

There's been a lot of sewing and making in the Lynn household lately! Over Christmas my son's girlfriend, Lucy, and I spent some fun times sewing things together. It was great. We made lavender hearts, cushion covers, glasses cases - and also pearly jewellery! I liked it so much I started a company. Ha! Well, an Etsy site at the moment, at least. FloraLilly is an amalgam of my two grandmothers' names; Florence and Lillian.
The cushion, above, is what I call a Memory cushion cover. You know when you have lovely, favourite and pretty dresses / blouses / shirts hanging in your wardrobe you can't, for some reason or other, wear again, but still love them so much? Well, that. I made the top part of this dress into a cushion cover! Careful to sew it so it retained the character of the dress, I am so pleased I now see it every day in my sitting room instead of it being hidden away from site, useless. I've decided that this is my home of choice. It's not in Cheltenham though. I've been in Norwich looking after very unwell parents and have occasionally been shown around the city superbly by Dive which has been an absolute treat in between all the stress and worry of hospital visiting. There are many shots to show of this lovely city, over the next days/weeks, but I rather fell in love with this house...

Gloucestershire Royal Wedding...?

The Queen's granddaughter, Miss Zara Phillips. I photographed her as she was starting the Golden Button horse race in Gloucestershire just a couple of weeks ago. It was a privilege - she is a dream to photograph, with wonderful skin and beautiful eyes. The bonus was of course being able to photograph the ring! She has recently become engaged to Mike Tindall. No date set yet for the wedding. I am of course hoping for a Gloucestershire wedding as this is where she lives!... as do I, always with keen camera ;D

It's -8 F tonight again with lots of snow. This was taken at 5 am yesterday as it started. Very soon these footprints were more than covered. At present it's about 5" deep with more due tomorrow. Britain stops, pretty much, when such snow falls. Looks marvellous, but at the moment we're snowed in.

Okay so it's Theme Day at City Daily Photo. The theme is TIME. You can just see my clock here, behind the glass of water! More to the point, you see how time passes in the photo on the left. I am the little girl. With my brother and mother in London. On the right, time passes to show me in the centre, crowded happily into a phone booth with my own children, taken circa. 1995. Bringing time up to date are my sunglasses, worn today, and the lovely coaster sent to me by my friend Sue, who has been a marvellous friend for years and years, through lots of times, which says The Wonderful Girl. :D

Well, I'm back, and hoping to post again regularly, if not always daily. Recovering reasonably well; thank you so much for all your good wishes. Was out on a (very slow!) walk with my friend Sue recently, we collected some conkers. They are so beautiful and the horse chestnut trees are suffering from some sort of blight in Blighty at the moment so I thought I would photograph them.

Trip to the Supermarket - Gloucestershire style

Sometimes I long for the excitement of living in a city - but when you consider these views are what I have simply on my trip to the supermarket, really, it's hard to beat :)

These views look over towards the Malvern Hills. I live somewhere inbetween ;)

On the other side of the road is this view, towards Woolstone. You can just see the village church nestling in the centre.

Even whilst on this road which cuts through the countryside, the views ahead are pretty!

Reflections - City Daily Photo Theme Day

Joining in with City Daily Photo Theme Day, of 'Reflections', this is a shot I took in 1981 of the lovely Lady Diana, as she was then, just days before her wedding. Driving herself out of Kensington Palace, where she lived, accompanied by her bodyguard. Now - if you click to enlarge, you will see on the bottom part of the window, a reflection of.... me! in grey silk blouse, I recall, lol, taking the picture. I was 22. Next to me, in suit and tie (but of course!) is my father. Next to him is my mother's arm, also taking her own pic. :D

Cygnets at Tewkesbury

Keeping close to Mum, these cygnets bathe in the sunshine near the mill at Tewkesbury. Bit worrying that the water seems very dirty there at the moment. Swan's neck was covered in mud as she repeatedly disappeared underneath, finding food for the little ones.

Interesting perspective? Many of us call it the Tenin perspective! Eric Tenin, a Parisian, has been taking photos of Paris and posting a different one each day now for 5 years! He started the City Daily Photo habit which now has members worldwide.

He has become known for placing his camera on the ground in order to get THAT shot. Soon, he will be recognised as the photographer who is to be found flat on the ground in Paris :) He has inspired me many times and this shot is one of those I took, with his style in mind. Enough of the rain, we need a change. So - here's a favourite photo of my Mother. One of many. It's not even a good shot, technically it's quite fuzzy. I like it though; the casual capture of her talking to friends, her gesture, very 'her'. I took it in 1983. Good memory. She's not had the best year, healthwise, last year so here's hoping for a better one in 2010! :)

Water Near Water

So, the whole town is still dry and open for business - no serious flooding yet, but it is very high as you see here. Tewkesbury's River Avon has broken its banks and flooded across vast fields. This time it is perilously near the Water Treatment plant, above, which caused all the trouble in 2007, but the plant does now have some defence walls built, albeit temporary. So far, so good. We were forecast more snow, but so far it has avoided Tewkesbury and hit the Cotswold villages. Fingers crossed.... !

Downpour

Victoria Gardens, Tewkesbury, flooded once again. Makes a pretty picture but that's about all. Last night we had lots & lots of rain, full on. I've yet to go into town to see the results - will let you know tomorrow. I do hope those who were flooded badly in 2007 have not suffered once again. Certainly was a heavy and sustained downpour in the night, even waking me up.

The snow has all but gone now and, predictably, it leaves floods in Tewkesbury. This is the view from my home, you may remember these are usually fields - now a lake! It's not at a dangerous level quite yet though so our feet are still dry! On Wednesday we are forecast....more snow!

It's getting deeper and deeper... great fun but not now the Government has cut back on gritting - the country's running out of salt apparently. Only main roads will be treated, which is all fine and good if you can get to them. Better to spend the money on more salt than the losses by people not getting to work and school.

Artist Jeremy Houghton opened his new gallery in the Cotswolds, near Broadway, on 10th December with some fine Italian themed paintings. I was there to photograph the evening for him and enjoyed the 'Italian Extravaganza', complete with delicious food, a tempting Ferrari parked outside, wine tasting by Sam Sandbach and a stunning operatic recital by Melissa Freissner-Day.

Hatton Court Hotel

This is the terrace at Hatton Court Hotel in Upton St. Leonard's, Gloucestershire. Went there the other day for a women's business networking lunch meeting. Very useful contacts made through the WEB (Women Entrepreneurs in Business) so it was worth going, but it was fair to say that the lunch was abysmal.

After (I admit I was late, but had booked and paid £15 so had reasonable right to be expected, and had warned of my late arrival) had to ask for a place setting to be made for me, then having to request further a bowl, cutlery and glass & water jug I settled down to a lunch my stomach was pleading for. I had a few quarters of dried sandwiches of processed cheese and tomato, some dried couscous, then a colleague and I found ourselves sharing out four small profiteroles between us with a spoonful of tinned fruit cocktail and a few drops of chocolate sauce which had 'run out'. Of course, £15 is not a lot, but you do expect some service & reasonable food. So, thank you to WEB for the meeting but I so look forward to a different venue next time.

Yesterday the levels got higher as you can see by the tree in the distance, past which is normally just fields, cows/sheep. This side of the tree is the river, though it has flooded this way now too. Looks like the mill dwellers will be cut off again. Last time, in 2007, they kayak'd out of their houses...

Autumn Under Water

Tewkesbury At Night

Tewkesbury at night. This is the old mill and Back of Avon, taken from King John's Bridge. There is so much water around at the moment, I can't quite make out which is river here and which is flooded! Houses and shops are water free though, it's largely fields which are taking the extra rainfall and it's well worth a visit to the medieval town.

Flood Update

River breaks its banks at Back of Avon in Tewkesbury by the mill. The red building is the Water Treatment plant. In 2007 this was a real problem as it flooded, leaving 75,000 inhabitants in the Borough without water.Here's the same scene from yesterday, one day on. Slightly higher. Hopefully it has peaked now... :)

Flooding under King John's Bridge

River Avon rising steadily - click picture to see how close the people are to the new level. The arches on King John's Bridge have so little space under them now. This bridge was commissioned by King John in 12th century. It's seen all this many times before - how much more can it take?
More photos of Tewkesbury River Avon flooding today here. I must add that, although this all looks pretty near to the mark, it's fairly usual for Tewkesbury and has not nearly reached the levels of 2007. So far. :)

This is a courtyard of shops at the foot of Montpellier Street in Cheltenham, an area of trendy coffee shops, bars & designer shops. Oh and some palm type trees, quite incongruous to our weather.

Bridge over the River ...Avon in Tewkesbury. This slightly springy bridge goes from the centre of town's backwater to the large spanse of fields beyond (left) called The Ham. Popular with dogwalkers and sheep.

Driven to Construction

Protests are all about getting noticed and Alan Grimmett, from Monterey Road in Tewkesbury, has certainly done that. Annoyed by some 80 buses a day passing his house, he has built a sign over his sitting room window, attacking the local councils for waste of public money and adding to the climate change issue. The bus stop near his house was not there when he bought his home - he says councils have told him it was meant to be temporary and will be moving the stop in due course - and he claims it has reduced its value and diminished the quality of life for him, his family & neighbours. I was there for 9 minutes and two buses came past.Alan Grimmett has attracted much press attention for his protest.

I worried about this chap. He'd passed me on my left whilst driving, so I wasn't expecting to see him and I wondered about the safety of such a vehicle. As we had stopped, I reached across to my camera and captured the moment. Perhaps he was irritated by the jam, or maybe just emotional and who could blame him. This was taken on the way back from Remembrance Day parade.

Remembrance Day - attended by hundreds today in Tewkesbury, where there was a march, parade and poppy wreaths laid at the Cross monument in the centre of town. Weather was terrible and the rain poured over the crowd and servicemen and women. I was struck by so many sad faces, deep expressions. Obviously you would expect that, but with news of yet one more British young man losing his life only today in Afghanistan, it somehow made it worse. Looking directly out of my back windows, the very least I see are gorgeous green fields for miles then beautiful hills. Sometimes the fields are dry and corn coloured. Often they flood and then the whole thing turns magically into a stunning lake. We get sheep in there too; er, not when the lake's there. Now, just for a change, we have cows! What fun to have such a diversely changing view.

So it's Theme Day again, and the theme is 'Doorways'. This is a loo, recently installed at the Cheltenham Literary Festival as a temporary measure. Now, usually, you would run screaming from a portable toilet, but this one, being Cheltenham, is clearly a luxury one. I didn't go in, but I'm betting there were towels and Lux soap in there... :)

This is Gloucester Docks. I find it a pleasant place to be any day of the week for a quick break, watch the birds and the ships etc... I like to be near water. This of course was the day the Queen also came to the docks, hence the flag, of which there were many.

They visited Gloucestershire College, then went to GCHQ in Cheltenham in the afternoon. I took quite a few pics at Gloucester of the royal couple, but didn't follow on to GCHQ (Intelligence) as security is so tight there you can't get near. Autumn's really here now with leaves falling all round us as we shop in Cheltenham's Prom area. The town's still full of people attending the Literature Festival with many great speakers and some humour today, from Will Self, Alan Davies and Justin Lee Collins. Still time to book!

Sheep Rescue

Heroes today in Tewkesbury! These firemen responded to a call from the public to say a sheep had got stuck in mud down the river bank. Not the first, either. This was the second sheep in the same afternoon, the first further up the river. It's hot and dry weather at the moment and the animals are trying to get to the water to drink. Poor things get stuck up to their middles. Thank goodness for these men then! More pics here This little girl, Amy, happened to be watching the rescue of the sheep and she clapped the firemen's work all the way through!

Night Out
